Debt Enforcement Register (Betreibungsregister)

What is the Betreibungsregister?

The Betreibungsregister, or debt enforcement register, is where all running and passed debt enforcements / Betreibungen are documented. If somebody has debt enforcements to their name, financial institutions will find out by running a check of this register.

The Betreibungsregister acts as a tool to verify somebody’s financial credibility and plays a role in most contracts that involve a financial component, such as leasing contracts, loans, rental agreements for flats, or even for employment. Individuals will need to produce a copy of their entry in the Betreibungsregister for most of these proceedings. They can do so by directly contacting the debt enforcement agency of their home canton.

Only the person themselves or parties who can prove they have reasonable interest in an individual’s financial history are allowed insight into an entry of the debt enforcement register. The register thus plays a key role in maintaining transparency and trust in financial dealings within Switzerland, while also protecting individuals' privacy rights.

For many instances, it is vital that an individual has no entries in this register. Find out more on how to get rid of entries into the Betreibungsregister by reading our gowago.ch blog article Leasing despite Betreibung
